Can Iron Doors Be Customized? Design Options & Styles

Iron doors offer endless customization to match your vision, from elegant traditional designs with intricate details to sleek, modern looks. Tailor them perfectly with options like custom sizes, different glass styles (clear, frosted, or textured), elaborate scrollwork, premium hardware choices, and a range of finishes. Add personal touches such as monograms, nature-themed patterns, or specific door swing directions for a truly unique entryway.

What “Custom” Actually Means

At TurnKey Ironworks, “custom” isn’t a marketing word—it describes how every door is built:

  • Opening measured on-site, not picked from a catalog
  • Design drafted to match your architectural style and material preferences
  • Frame and leaf welded from raw steel stock, not assembled from pre-fabricated components
  • Hardware, glass, and finish selected per door, not per product line

The end result is a single-origin door with a paper trail: which installer measured it, who welded it, what day it was finished, and what finish system was used. That level of traceability is part of why iron doors retain value.

Size and Shape Options

Standard and Oversize Widths

Openings from 30″ to 96″ for single doors, 60″ to 120″ for double doors, and up to 144″ for pivot doors. Structural openings beyond those require engineered hardware, which we’ll spec during the consultation.

Height Options

80″, 84″, 96″, 108″, and 120″ are the most common. Non-standard heights are no problem for custom fabrication—we simply cut the stock to your measurement.

Top Styles

  • Square head: standard, works with most architecture
  • Radius/arched top: full round, segmental, or eyebrow curves
  • Transom: a separate glass section above the door for extra daylight
  • Cathedral/ogee: ornamental top for Gothic Revival and historic styles

Scrollwork and Decorative Detail

Traditional Scroll Patterns

Classic S-curves, C-scrolls, and leaf motifs. Best for Greek Revival, Italianate, Victorian, and most historic New Orleans architecture.

Geometric and Art Deco

Chevrons, rectilinear grids, sunbursts, and stepped patterns. Good match for 1920s-1940s architecture, including some of the Lakeview and Broadmoor homes.

Contemporary and Minimalist

Clean grid patterns, horizontal banding, single vertical divider, or completely unembellished flat panels. Pairs with modern new builds and mid-century renovations.

Custom Family Crests or Monograms

Laser-cut or hand-forged family initials, house numbers, or custom monograms set into the door or transom. This is one of the most popular personalization options.

Glass Options

  • Clear tempered: maximum light, maximum visibility in both directions
  • Frosted or acid-etched: full light with privacy
  • Rain, reed, or textured glass: decorative pattern with diffused privacy
  • Stained or leaded glass: hand-built glasswork for Victorian, Craftsman, and Art Nouveau homes
  • Beveled glass: clear glass with decorative beveled edges
  • Laminated / security glass: impact-resistant, sound-dampening
  • Insulated Low-E: the default for energy efficiency in New Orleans

Finish Colors and Textures

The finish is what most visitors notice first.

Options include:

  • Matte black (most popular)
  • Satin black
  • Oil-rubbed bronze
  • Antique bronze with copper highlights
  • Hand-rubbed patinas (greens, browns, verdigris)
  • Custom RAL colors (white, navy, forest green, deep red, etc.)
  • Hammered or distressed texture for a rustic look
  • Brushed or polished stainless for modern builds

Finishes are applied over zinc-rich primer and either powder-coated (more durable) or hand-finished (more nuanced appearance). We’ll help you weigh the trade-offs during design.

Hardware

Hardware is the jewelry of the door:

  • Handlesets: handle + deadbolt combinations from Baldwin, Emtek, Ashley Norton, and custom-forged options
  • Multi-point locks: three-point, five-point, or seven-point systems for security and weather sealing
  • Pulls: custom hand-forged pulls up to 36″ in length for oversize doors
  • Hinges: ball-bearing, spring-loaded, or pivot hardware
  • Smart locks: Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, keypad, biometric
  • Kick plates and thresholds: matching the overall finish

Frequently Asked Questions

Can iron doors be fully customized?

Yes. Every TurnKey Ironworks door is custom-built to your opening size, shape, scrollwork, glass, hardware, and finish. There are no “stock” doors—each one is fabricated from raw steel stock to your specifications.

How long does custom iron door fabrication take?

Typical fabrication is four to eight weeks after design approval, depending on complexity. Intricate scrollwork, specialty glass, and custom-forged hardware can extend the timeline.

Can I bring my own design idea or reference photo?

Absolutely. Most of our clients bring reference photos from magazines, Pinterest, or architectural styles they admire. We translate those references into a drawing that fits your specific opening.

What finishes work best in New Orleans humidity?

Baked-on powder coat in satin or matte finishes holds up best long-term. Hand-rubbed patinas look stunning but need more frequent touch-ups in high-humidity environments.

Can I match my iron door to my fence, gate, or railings?

Yes—we recommend it. Matching finish, scrollwork, and hardware across a property creates a cohesive exterior. If you have existing TurnKey Ironworks fencing or railings, we can match exactly.

Is a custom iron door more expensive than a stock steel door?

Yes, custom iron doors are significantly more expensive than big-box steel doors at purchase. However, they last three to five times longer and carry much higher resale value, which makes them more economical per year of ownership.
