On March 28, 1699, Pierre Le Moyne, Sieur d’Iberville, and his group camped at Goose Point on the northern coast of Lake Pontchartrain, near what would later become Slidell. This marks the earliest documented European presence in the Slidell area. New Orleans was established in 1718 with over 300 settlers, who began clearing land along the river.
In the early 1700s, French trading outposts and small communities appeared along the northern coast of the lake. These outposts facilitated the trade of fresh meat and produce from the local Acolapissa people, helping New Orleans thrive during its early years.
